Our owner Eric Deiter had the unique experience of studying under the head of the International Jazz Council at Berklee for a semester. Eric says, "I remember him saying that 'Jazz isn’t a genre, it’s an attitude.' That quote still sticks with me. Jazz really is about the risks your willing to take with harmony."

For that reason, many of our advanced students find themselves in our jazz guitar lessons. Not because jazz is hard (it is), but because of all of the possibilities the genre allows for. Many students then take these concepts and bring them into their favorite genres (folk, metal, prog) and bring new harmony to old favorites.

At QBGS, we believe that you must absolutely have an instructor if you want to explore jazz. There is just SO much and students tend to like to skip steps. For example, they want to play a ton of fancy chords with a walking bassline. While you could memorize your favorite song that uses that skill, you won’t really be embracing the jazz “attitude.” If you don’t know what or why your doing it, it’s not going to land.

We will keep you on track by managing the flow of content as you build your chord and scale vocabulary. Our approach to jazz tends to be more project-based, along with theory explanations, as well as a lot of chord construction/deconstruction because we want you to be able to use what you’re learning not collect a bunch of ideas and exercises that you’ll forget by next month.
