Myth: Beginning guitar students are the easiest to teach. Because they know next to nothing, you can teach them pretty much anything and they’ll improve.

Fact: Beginners are the hardest demographic to teach. They need things broken down into tiny bites and need to be given the right information at the right time. The correct info at the wrong time (as in too early) will overwhelm the student, leading to frustration and potentially causing them to quit altogether. 

Inexperienced guitar teachers vastly overestimate what a beginner can do and set impossible standards simply because they don’t understand what beginners need. There is a clear line between a teacher having high standards and that teacher expecting success simply because they showed you once.

If you a guitar teacher ever uses the word “just” in their feedback, they’re likely oversimplifying a compound movement and are asking way too much of you. “You just do it faster…” “Just move your fingers like I did…” “just practice scales more often…” “Just listen to the song and play what you hear…:
